Interview with our Key Account Manager, Barbara Brutsaert - 1st part

Barbara Brutsaert, Key Account Manager at VetPharm:

“VetPharm’s main strength lies in its integration of scientific knowledge with field application. The company works closely with veterinarians and producers to ensure that its recommendations are grounded in real production conditions. A strong emphasis is placed on diagnostics and data analysis. For example, tools such as Reovirus diagnostics and vaccination program evaluations are used to identify underlying issues and guide decision making for choosing the right additives to counter losses in the short term. This allows VetPharm to move beyond generic recommendations and provide targeted, customer-tailored solutions.”

In this exclusive interview with Feed & Additive Magazine, Brutsaert walks us through the company’s science-driven yet field-first philosophy, and the growing relevance of overlooked nutrients like orthosilicic acid in today’s demanding production systems. From the pressure on laying hens in extended cycles to the latest findings on silicium supplementation and Reovirus-related tendon health, the conversation offers a candid look at where poultry nutrition is heading and how VetPharm intends to be part of that future.

Q: “It was a pleasure connecting with you during the 9th International Conference on Poultry Intestinal Health. What role do international platforms like ICPIH play in advancing the poultry industry?”

Barbara: “International platforms such as the International Conference on Poultry Intestinal Health (ICPIH) play an important role in advancing both scientific understanding and practical application. They provide a forum where researchers and industry professionals can exchange knowledge and align on emerging challenges. This is particularly relevant in the field of intestinal health, which is influenced by multiple interacting factors, including nutrition, microbiota, immunity, and management practices. Such events also facilitate the translation of research into field application. In a rapidly evolving industry, this connection between science and practice is essential for developing effective and scalable solutions. Fostering collaboration and networking among industry professionals is becoming more and more important in a consolidating industry.”

Q: “For our readers who may not be familiar with VetPharm yet, how would you describe your company? What are the core solutions you provide to the animal nutrition and health industry?”

Barbara: “VetPharm is an internationally active company specializing in the distribution of veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and feed additives. The company focuses on delivering scientifically validated solutions that support animal health, welfare, and production efficiency under commercial conditions. Rather than operating as a traditional distributor, VetPharm positions itself as a technical partner to veterinarians, nutritionists, and producers. This involves combining product supply with high-end technical field expertise, offering total solutions and ensuring these are correctly implemented and deliver measurable results. The company’s activities are particularly strong in the poultry sector, where it integrates nutritional support, veterinary solutions, and diagnostic services. This combined approach allows VetPharm to address complex health and performance challenges in a structured and practical way.”

Q: “What is the founding story of VetPharm? What need gave birth to the company, and how has this vision evolved to where it stands today?”

Barbara: “VetPharm was founded in 2011 to address a gap between product manufacturers and end users in the livestock sector. At the time, there was a clear need for a partner capable of combining access to products for gut health and Mycoplasma control with world-class technical knowledge and field-level support. A product can be the best in class, but not understanding how to use it can completely undermine its activity and return on investment. The company initially focused on key poultry health challenges, particularly intestinal health and respiratory diseases. Although these are still a cornerstone of the company, its role has evolved significantly. Today, VetPharm operates as a solution-oriented partner, combining products with diagnostics, advisory services, and field validation. A notable development in this evolution has been the introduction of Poulsil, a bioavailable silicium-based feed additive. It reflects the company’s focus on targeted innovations that address specific physiological bottlenecks in modern poultry production.”

Q: “What are the key strengths that differentiate VetPharm in the sector? Particularly in terms of scientific approach and field applications, what is your positioning?”

Barbara: “VetPharm’s main strength lies in its integration of scientific knowledge with field application. The company works closely with veterinarians and producers to ensure that its recommendations are grounded in real production conditions. A strong emphasis is placed on diagnostics and data analysis. For example, tools such as Reovirus diagnostics and vaccination program evaluations are used to identify underlying issues and guide decision-making for choosing the right additives to counter losses in the short term. This allows VetPharm to move beyond generic recommendations and provide targeted, customer-tailored solutions. Combined with a focus on product quality and technical support, this approach positions the company as a practical and reliable partner in the field.”

As we move beyond the founding vision of the company, our discussion turns toward the specific innovations solving real-world production bottlenecks. In the second part of our interview, we explore VetPharm’s application-driven R&D philosophy, which prioritizes measurable field results over isolated theoretical benefits. Join us as we examine how collaboration with veterinarians is shaping the next generation of solutions—from the stability of orthosilicic acid to the international rollout of Poulsil in markets like Brazil and Asia.
